I was asked today what is the best way to reduce body fat. the question was from a high school student who I meet about a year ago. The question has many different ways in which it can be answered:
- Reduce the amount of food you intake
- Increase your energy expenditure
- Train with resistance such as weights
- Eat healthier
- Eat more often but less volume
- Train harder
These are just a few ways it can be answered. In general here is the simple answer: Eat well balanced meals throughout the day including fruits, vegetables and nuts as well as lean protein and low glycemic carbohydrates. Exercise at least four times per week at a high intensity, either using resistance training or interval work on the bike, treadmill or outdoor track. High intensity work includes minimal rest between sets with the weight training and work to rest ratios of 3:1 or 2:1 on the “aerobic pieces.”
I am not a fan of long slow distance for decrease body fat. Reason, have you ever seen a fat sprinter? or decathlete?
