As I watched the SEC Championship I was quite impressed with Greg McElroy’s performance in the championship game. I know he was overshadowed by his teammate Mark Ingram but one play for me really stands out. It was early in the game, either late first quarter or early second quarter. McElroy was back for a pass and was flushed out of the pocket. As he turned up field close to the sidelines he was being forced out of bounds, he then planted with his left foot hopped forward landing on his right foot and hopped again this time landing on his right foot while tight rope waking the sidelines before finally falling out of bounds for a first down. In my opinion this play somewhat rallied his team. He turned a loss into a gain and even a first down. It was also an example of strength, power and stability all coming together in an instant. The strength to avoid being knocked down, the power to be able to hop from foot to foot for positive yards and the stability to control the body, maintain his angles and create the push necessary to get the first down. Thanks for the visual Greg and congratulations on being SEC Champions. Another great example of a similar move was from Mark Ingram Sr who played with the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXV. It was Third and thirteen and the Giants were driving in third quarter against the Buffalo Bills. Jeff Hostetler threw a pass which was caught by Ingram at the time four yards short of the first down. Mark ducked under one tackle (Darryl Tally) cut back to the middle of the field, cut back to the side lines (this was a one-two step) to avoid Mark Kelso and then hopped on one foot for three yards while another Bill was holding his leg for a FIRST DOWN. Another great example of strength, power and stability during the game. Usually strength, power and stability are involved in every play but sometimes it just hits you in the face and you say WOW, that was special.
