I was speaking in a classroom setting today to PGM students and we were focusing on the evaluation of the athlete or client. Being that all the students were golf professionals we discussed the how the physical evaluation can have an impact on the performance of the golf swing. The evaluation is important in any sport or activity. Before you know where you are going you must know where you are starting. Physical imperfections have a large impact on power, speed, strength, stability and mobility.

We always hear of a player that performs activities with such ease and grace and makes their sport seem effortless. The main reason is that the majority of these players are performing without physical hindrance. To be able to eccentrically and concentrically contract agonistic and antagonistic muscle groups effortlessly is a true sign of true athleticism. I like to refer to this as efficiency and effortless power. The body that is hindered in a unloaded state, initial evaluation will have difficulty obtaining true efficiency.

I started working with a new client today. his goal is to start playing professional golf. Now professional golf ranges from the PGA tour all the way down to tournaments where the total purse is $500. the point of this is not to talk about the tournament but how we started training.

I usually start the same with most of the athletes and teach the how to land first. Deceleration is the key to efficiency of training. The clients response was why are you teaching me to land when I already know how? A good question if he truly knew how to land. Most athletes and individuals are quad dominant and have a tendency to land knees forward with their weight on their toes. No different with this individual. The true deceleration is absorbing the land with your butt and hamstrings, feeling as if you are sitting on the heels. Most individuals will use the upper body to lean back thinking this is helping them to sit back. In reality it is causing the knees to push farther forward and decreasing the glute involvement.

Once an individual has gained the awareness of the body position it is time to initiate the jump. ensuring that they land in a similar position as takeoff.
